Mathematical Rules of Divisibility

The ability to determine if a number is divisible by 33, 66, or 99 is rooted in simple, elegant rules.

Divisibility by 33

A number is divisible by 33 if and only if the sum of its digits is divisible by 33.

Let NN be a positive integer with digits d1,d2,...,dnd_1, d_2, ..., d_n:

N=d1×10n−1+d2×10n−2+…+dnN = d_1 \times 10^{n-1} + d_2 \times 10^{n-2} + \ldots + d_n

Calculate the digit sum SS:

S=d1+d2+…+dnS = d_1 + d_2 + \ldots + d_n

If SS is divisible by 33, then NN is divisible by 33.

Example:
For N=123N = 123,

S=1+2+3=6S = 1 + 2 + 3 = 6

Since 66 is divisible by 33, 123123 is divisible by 33.

Divisibility by 99

A number is divisible by 99 if and only if the sum of its digits is divisible by 99.

If S=d1+d2+…+dn is divisible by 9, then N is divisible by 9.\text{If } S = d_1 + d_2 + \ldots + d_n \text{ is divisible by } 9, \text{ then } N \text{ is divisible by } 9.

Example:
For N=729N = 729,

S=7+2+9=18S = 7 + 2 + 9 = 18

Since 1818 is divisible by 99, 729729 is divisible by 99.

Divisibility by 66

A number is divisible by 66 if and only if it is divisible by both 22 and 33.

6=2×36 = 2 \times 3
  • To be divisible by 22, the last digit of the number must be even (0,2,4,6,80, 2, 4, 6, 8).
  • To be divisible by 33, use the rule for 33 above.

Example:
For N=132N = 132:

  • The last digit is 22 (even), so 132132 is divisible by 22.
  • 1+3+2=61 + 3 + 2 = 6, and 66 is divisible by 33.

Therefore, 132132 is divisible by 66.
